Spring is just around the corner and for many dog owners there is nothing better than enjoying this time of year with their four-legged friend. The longer days and milder temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities. If you want to really enjoy spring with your dog, we have put together six fun and dog-friendly activities for you. From walks through flowering meadows to joint sporting activities - discover new adventures that you and your dog can experience together.
1. Go camping
Who says you have to put your four-legged friends in a dog daycare when you go on vacation? Why don't you just take him with you on the trip? Camping trips are fun for dogs of all sizes and give you both a chance to have a quality time hiking and exploring. And you don't necessarily have to stay in a tent for the trip to be a success. Research dog-friendly cabins at parks or lakes near you, and invite a friend who can bring their own dog.
2. Go swimming
Many dogs love the opportunity to have fun in the water, whether it's at the beach, on a trail near a lake, or on a nearby river. Even if there's a creek, river, or pond somewhere nearby, you and your dog can spend a few hours splashing around in the water and playing tag. However, if you do plan on getting in the water, save that for the warmer days or pack a towel so you can dry off.
3. Train together
Do you still feel like you're hibernating after this winter? Then you now have the opportunity to exercise in the great outdoors - and if you bring your dog with you, you can help each other and get a good workout at the same time. Grab your bike, rollerblades or just your jogging shoes, grab his leash and hit the road. Research some of the most dog-friendly parks in town and train there. Maybe you will meet other dog owners with whom you can let off steam together.
4. Off-leash fun
If you live in a dog-friendly apartment, your property manager may provide a small run for dogs to roam and exercise. If you're looking for a place with a little more space to let your dog run free, look for free-roaming beaches or dog parks in town. Bring some tennis balls, a frisbee , or another toy that your dog enjoys chasing. Not only will Fido have a lot of fun running around outside, he will also be able to meet and interact with other dogs (just make sure you keep a close eye on these interactions in case one of the dogs gets scared or aggressive).
5. Become competitive
Is your dog still a puppy? Then it is important to train him so that he masters some basic commands such as "sit", "stay" and "down". Training dogs that compete, however, takes it a step further by teaching the dogs to jump through hoops and other obstacles in the course . Check the internet to see if there are agility classes in your area. They often take place outdoors so you can both enjoy the spring weather.
6. Go shopping
The next time you take your furry friend for a walk, keep an eye out for nearby dog-friendly shops and cafes that won't mind the two of you coming. Pet stores are usually fine with dogs and cats shopping with their owners and the two of you enjoying window shopping around the neighborhood. Afterwards you can relax in a dog-friendly café or on a terrace, soak up the sun and have a bite to eat before heading home.
Whatever you do, try to get outside and do something with your dog at least a few times a week - you'll both love enjoying the sun and warm weather!
